1

Just to catch you up with me, I was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil,
and leave in Athens, Greece.

For the nationality fans, my father is half greek, half armenian, which makes me
one third armenian, one third greek and another third brazilian.

I studied classical music at Conservatorio Dramatico e Musical de Sao Paulo
(Instrument Technician Degree and Bachelor in Arts Diploma).
Until my early 20s I played a lot of classical and contemporary music,
Bach and Villa-Lobos were always on the agenda, along with Debussy
and Bela Bartok.

In fact, I was so much into Villa-Lobos works that I won the first prize at the
"Heitor Villa-Lobos Piano Competition", in Sao Paulo.

Still in Sao Paulo I worked with Ballet da Cidade, playing for modern dance classes
and performinhg with the company.
Computer studies came later, although I had brazilian-made Spectrum clones
since I was 15.

I studied computers at Centre of Programming Research Development Institute
in Greece and Greenwich College in London (Diploma in Computer Programming).

In Greece I had the chance to experiment with minimalism and electronic music
and cooperated with the Centre for Contemporany Electronic Music Research
and the Research Institute of Music and Acousticts.

2

Dance always played an important role in my life, no wonder my best friends are dancers.

Shortly after I had settled down in Athens I got a job as musician at State School of Dance
in Athens and worked with many greek and foreign dancers and dance companies.
Recently I was offered a place in the music team of the National Greek Opera.

Later on I played with Apurimac, the leading latin-music group in Greece.
Together we released the "Mother Earth" album by the Lyra label.

Dealing with tools and materials goes back to my childhood, as my father
was a constructor. Fixing and repairing things was part of my everyday routine
and it's no wonder that sound sculptures and Installations came later,
after a proposal for a series of performances at Fournos Centre for the Digital Culture
and Athens School of Fine Arts.

The Rodelophones Installation won the Omiros Group award at Installation Art category
and has been presented at Athens Video Art Festival, PixelDance Festival at Thessalonika,
FILE 2006 at Sao Paulo, Brazil, Athens Festival and Athens International Dance Festival.

studio & workspace

My new home studio and workspace at Nea Smyrni Athens, with its relatively inspiring view to the garden and the passing-by cats.

My aim was to build a quiet and acoustic decent recording and processing audio suite, so I did some sound treatment to the ceiling (see my instructables page) and kept everything noisy, like external hard-disks, outside the room.

Amazingly for me, this worked.

instructables

I'm very into How To and DIY so making things, fixing and soldering are part of my everyday's agenda. This are the latest from my instructable video series:

soundproof ceiling

Last year (2008) I did some sound treatment to my studio's ceiling with great results. It took me about 20 hours of work using a helpfull bar (Knauff) for lifting / setting the drywalls. I also used stonewool and at the end some very cheap and easy to apply finishing material.

logicboard replacement

The Titanium Powerbook G4 was my first mac. Replacing the logicboard / motherboard was easier than I expected, thanks to iFixit.com. One helpfull tip is to have little bottles to put screws and little easy-to-loose parts.

floor transducer

I was in need of at least four transducers for capturing floor noise at my new project with LUMI Dance Company. Its a really simple and low cost construction, about 2,5 euros altogether. I used wood from a found old desk.

Video comming soon...

capoeira

I practice capoeira for quite a while now, altough I have to admit that I play better pandeiro than do the ginga,
capoeira's basic step.

My teacher is contra-mestre Paulinho from Associação de Capoeiragem Senzala.

The thing with capoeira is that, part from being a dance and martial art, you have to become a musician
in order to participate.

The basic instruments that a student has to learn is berimbau, pandeiro and atabaque.

Feral

6 5 4 3 2 1

After several years working with dancers and dance companies I decided to create Lumi Dance Company.
My aim is to combine my music and sound installations with choreography so as to consist part of a wider artistic frame, focusing mostly at experimental motive and exploring questions deriving from an artistic event.

Feral is the first creation of the company. It's a concept based on the philosophical experiment by Ibn Tufail "The Improvement of Human Reason" and concerns the relation of the human being with the dipoles life-death, soul-body, unit-total, knowledge-experience, connection-logout.

It incorporates my Lastixa Installation and choreography by Myrto Grapsa.

RootlessRoot - Sudden Showers of Silence

6 5 4 3 2 1

Working with Linda Kapetanea and Josef Fruzek of RootllessRoot was as smooth as it could be.

I builded some custom sound sculptures for their "Sudden Showers of Silence" duet, presented at Athens Festival and several european cities.

My sound sculptures just gave the last touches at an almost ready setup.

Lastixa

4 3 2 1 5 6

My new creation of sound sculpture / interactive installation is made of silicone tubes, aluminium and wire.

All sculptures are hanged from the ceiling and sound is achieved by pulling the silicone tubes, wich causes the attached aluminium parts to fall on top of each other producing a metallic, almost glassy sound.

Also the visual effect is quite impressing, caused by the light reflected by the aluminium parts.

Lastixa is also taking part in my new project of dance performance with Lumi Dance Company and plans are to have this installation and the Rodelophones Installation together in my first solo exhibition some time in the future.

FILE - Festival Internacional da Linguagem Eletronica

6 5 4 3 2 1

It was wonderfull to return to Sao Paulo and take part at FILE.

The festival brings artists from all over the world to Sao Paulo to exhibit a real, comprehensive crop of electronic arts.

Prestigious names such as Zachary Lieberman and Young-hae Chang, already used to hype-exhibitions, share the gallery space with artists who are bravely facing their first bugs, error messages and victories in the Art&Technology world.

The festival is open to the general public, who will be able to interact with the works and take part in the other events, such as Symposium and Hipersonica.

Pixeldance

6 5 4 3 2 1

Organized by "InFlux Art", the Pixeldance Festival took place at Kalamaria, city of Thessalonika.

It was my first visit to the city of Kalamaria. I had the opportunity to build a very large installation in the entrance of an old building used by the army long time ago.

The pictures that I like most are the ones with little children playing with the installation.

Prosxima Dance Company

4 3 2 1

Choreographed and performed by Maria Koleopoulou and Stella Zanou. Presented at Fournos Centre for Digital Culture, Chroma-Chroma Art Space and Athens School of Fine Arts.

This performance marks my first experiment with a sound-sculpture instrument, the monophonic rodelophone.

I did a lot of live sound experimenting and the soundtrack was a mixture of acoustic and electronic elements like kalimba, cup of water and straw, computer, synthesizer.
